A UK commercial insurance broker

Verified COPE profiles found construction errors on 38% of the book, and portfolio questions that used to take three days are now answered on demand.

BrokerRISK APIRisk Intelligence

Situation

A commercial broker held risk information one client at a time. Schedules in spreadsheets, surveys as PDFs, material detail in broker notes. Nothing could be queried across the book.

Portfolio questions took three to four days to approximate. The approximations rested on client assertions that had never been verified.

Approach

All 22,000 insured locations were resolved and profiled through Risk_API. Each returned over 100 structured COPE data points, delivered into the broker’s own environment and refreshed on cycle rather than at renewal.

Results

The portfolio returned in minutes. Construction detail was wrong or absent on 38% of the book. 640 properties sat in the top two flood bands, 210 of which appeared on no schedule as a flood risk. Eleven postcodes carried more than £15m of combined sums insured.

Questions that took three days are now answered on demand. Survey spend fell 22% in year one, with surveys commissioned against identified gaps.

Implication

Submission quality is the broker’s leverage with underwriters. Evidenced data allows the risk to be tested rather than discounted. It also reduces the professional indemnity exposure carried by placing cover on unverified property information.
